My sister lives in Kentucky and she just sent me some pictures of the nasty ice storm that they just got. I thought I’d share them with you. We got a good coating here where I live but nothing like that. Of course schools were cancelled for 2 days and 2 hours delayed today!!! Having to deal with the boys home all day is getting on my nerves!

Nothing really happening
Hi. Just wanted to check in and let you know that not much is happening and hence not much to post. I did just set up my blog so that I can email my postings to it. That may make it a little easier to post to.
It's snowing here today. So of course schools are closed. The boys are out and about.

HEADstrong Foundation
The have taken their tragedy and are turning it into a positive fund-raising experience. I spoke with her for about 15 minutes and you could tell how emotional she was about her son and the foundation. Michael was with me and I told her about how our lives too were turned upside down from cancer, and that our very close friends had also lost their young son to a similar disease. After we were done speaking I took the pink-ribbon pin that I wore in my jacket and gave it to her. She immediately put it on. Today I received an email from her. I include it here:
Charlie,
It meant so much to me that you took that pin off and gave it to me. My son Michael and I talked about you on the way home. I plan to wear the pin anytime I speak and at our events. Because of your wife and my son, we met and I feel we connected. Thank you for sharing your story with me. I can so relate and my prayers are with you.
On behalf of my Nick, thank you for helping us do our part to conquer the beast that took both of our loved ones.

Day in Baltimore
So that left today open. Michael and I got up early and went into Baltimore. The US Lacrosse convention is going on so we decided to go. Our first stop was The Blue Moon Cafe down by Fells Point. This place was featured on the show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. It certainly fits the bill of a dive! They are famous for their french toast made with Cap'n Crunch. We didn't have that but the cinnamon rolls and everything else was just amazing! The place only has 9 tables and is very old on the inside. They make up for it.
After breakfast we staggered back to the car and drove over to the convention center where the lax conference was being held. Along the way several streets were blocked off as Obama was stopping in town for a speech. We avoided the congestion and found a parking garage across the street from convention center.
When we got there we saw Alex's old lacrosse coach from Lycoming, Kara Reber. She's at St. Mary's in MD now and was there for the show. We chatted for a good while and then went on it. There was everything and anything lacrosse going on. I picked up a lot of good contacts and a lot of good information for the Spires Lacrosse Club which I'm currently President of. I also saw several old lacrosse coaches and friends of Chris and I that we made while Alex was playing club lax in high school.
We finally got home later that afternoon and are now sitting down for a move and popcorn. Another exciting Saturday night! Not all that bad though, some bonding time.

Pool Championship
As most of you know I have been playing in a pool league on Monday nights for about 3 years now. My father-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law played for quite awhile and finally got me to come out.I enjoy it a lot. It used to be a great way to take my mind off of things and relieve some of the stress that was weighing heavy on me.
After Chris died I've found it very, very hard to go. Mainly because that means that I have to leave the boys home alone for upwards of 4 hours on a school night. They never mind and sometimes I can shoot early and come home early.
This session (12-weeks) our team finished good enough to make the playoffs in our hall. We played last week and won our semi-final game and played last night. It was a tough team but we managed to beat them 3 matches to 1 in the best of 5 series. I played and won my match as did my 70+ year old father in law and my brother in law Ken. Winning means that we move on to a much bigger venue at a very large pool hall in Baltimore on February 7th.
Winning a pool match is never a really big deal. But for some reason last night really meant more than just a win. Maybe it was just nice to see something go my way for a change.

Caps Game
Had a good time at the Caps game in DC last night. We met up with our friends and went down early to try and get something to eat around the Verizon Center. No deal. It was packed. So we then went for a little walk up 7th Street and found a restaurant called RFD Washington. It was perfect. Had the football games on and the food was really good.We got to the game in plenty of time and found our up-high seats. They were still very good seats and you could see the entire ice. After the 1st period the boys split and found open seats a little lower. My friends and I hooked up with another person we knew there and spent the 3rd period down by the ice. Sweet view. We got home about 11:30 and called it a night.

Come and gone...
I set my alarm for 7:45 as I had to put the turkey in the oven. I hit the snooze and then at 7:50 my mother called me to wish me a Merry Christmas and thank me for the presents I sent to her. Needless to say I was a bit out of it! Everyone was up and about by 8:15.
The dog was excited and could not wait to get her new bones, and new bed. The boys got new snowboards and Alex got a new cell phone and a new NorthFace jacket. The kids pimped me out with new jeans and sweater to try and get me out of the 80's!
Everyone came over to our house around 4. We had a lot of food and everything turned out really well. We exchanged presents and had a gift game that we've done for many years now. It was nice day. Everyone left by 10pm and I just sat on the couch to soak it all in for awhile.
Yesterday (Sat) my friends from Annapolis all came up to see us here at our house. They brought soup, and pepperoni bread and all the things needed to have a nice evening! It was really very thoughtful of them. They care a lot about the kids and I and went out of their way to see us.
Today is Sunday and all the days of the last week are catching up to me. I'm really exhausted. I got the kids tickets to the Washington Capitals hockey game in D.C. for tonight so we'll be headed off to downtown in a little while. I'll fill you all in on that later.
Christmas came. There's a huge void left that was filled by Chris. I'm trying very hard to make things as good possible for us.
Happy new year !

Christmas Eve
Tomorrow we'll have about 30 people over to our house to celebrate Christmas. It has been very hard to get into the holiday spirit this year but I am trying. EVERY time I turn around something is reminding me of Chris. This is not a bad thing at all, don't get me wrong. It just tugs a little harder at the heart strings is all.
Last week a very good friend lost her father to a 17-month battle with brain cancer. Marianne is a dear friend of mine and worked for Chris for several years. Her birthday was last week and her father died on that day. I didn't know her dad very well as I had only met him a few times. What I do know is that the child that he raised is one that I have a great deal of trust and respect for. She helped me and continues to help me through all of my journey. We can only hope that our children grow up to be good people. Marianne's father did a wonderful job raising his and for that I am grateful. He will be missed by many, but he remains with us through his children.
I have more to do before tomorrow morning and I have to get up early to put my 22 pound turkey in the oven.
Merry Christmas to all that are reading this. God bless us all.

Lycoming Women’s lacrosse program honored with service award
12-16-08
CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. – The Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team was honored at the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Honors Banquet with the 2008 Team Community Awareness Award for Division III. Former coach Kara Reber accepted the award at the banquet.
Lycoming was informed over the summer that the team would be honored with this prestigious award, but could not release the information until after the banquet.
Reber and the Lady Warriors made an outstanding commitment to community service throughout the 2007-08 academic year, a commitment that included at least six separate events throughout the year.
In October and November (2007), the team captains organized a school supply drive to collect supplies for an impoverished school in Arizona.
On Dec. 1, the team visited the Valley View nursing home to play games and spend time with the elderly adults living at the home. It was the second year in a row that the Lady Warriors visited Valley View.
Also in December, the team captains and Lyz Logan team up to organize an event to send cards to soldiers serving the country overseas. Logan’s brother is currently serving in the military. All the players on the team wrote cards explaining what was going on in the states and letting them know how much their services were appreciated.
On Mar. 14, the Lady Warriors took part in a Relay for Life event on campus. The team raised and donated money throughout the night and took turns in the continuous walk throughout the event.
On Mar. 29, senior Heather Suit (2008 graduate) organized a special event for her senior community service project. She invited 25 girls from the Ashlor Manor, a home for troubled teens, to come to a Lycoming women’s lacrosse game. After the game, the girls were treated to a lunch and a two hour clinic with the Lady Warriors.
On April 12, Reber organized a “Pink Out” at a Lady Warrior home game. The team sold 500 pink t-shirts to raise money for breast cancer awareness. All the money raised was given to Climb for Hope, an organization that one of the players' mothers believed strongly in before she passed away. The Lady Warriors wore pink jerseys and encouraged all fans to wear pink to the game. After setting an initial goal of raising $3,000, the team more than doubled that with a total of $6,200 raised. The team also donated money to buy a brick on the Lycoming commencement steps to honor their teammate’s mother.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Adelphi University were also honored with the Team Community Awareness Award.

Trans Siberian Orchestra
Last night the kids and I went to DC to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra. We went to see them last year at about the same time and had a good time then. This year we went down early and walked around downtown DC for a little bit.

Jimmy V Foundation
Chris and I listened to this speech on April 28, 2007, the 14th anniversary of Jim's death. We were driving to John's Hopkins and she was scheduled to have a chemo treatment that day. After listening, I of course was all teary eyed, but she looked at me and said that she knew how he felt and that she felt the same way. It just goes to show you how your outlook on life and everything around you changes when cancer takes over. Not only the individual, but all those around them too. The thing to remember is to keep a positive attitude and live each and every minute of your life to it's absolute fullest.

Thanksgiving getaway...
We are staying at a place that is right on the lake calle Will O' the Wisp. The room is a 3-level condo with a loft. Each level has big windows overlooking the lake. It's great as we have space to get apart from one another at the same time it's small enough that we're still close.
When we arrived on Wednesday we unpacked and then went to dinner at the resort's restaurant Four Seasons and had the Pasta Mania all you can eat made to order pasta. Just like last year!
Thanksgiving morning the kids all slept in. I got up early and went for coffee at the local coffee shop Trader's Coffer House It was quiet and not many people there that morning. I read the paper and went back to wait for the kids.
We had dinner in the Four Seasons and it was excellent. We had a little bit of everything and then some more!!! We all walked away stuffed and barely able to walk! The boys went to the pool early in the evening and then we all crammed on the couch and watched a movie together on my laptop. No DVD in the room!
Friday we spent the day driving around the area. Spent about 4 hours looking at places that we have not been before. We were in WV for 1/2 the time as well. We did a little shopping in the old section of Oakland. We went to the antique store that Chris was in back in Aug 2007. She bought a plant stand that
Later that night we went and got a pizza for dinner and brought it back to eat. We lounged around for awhile. The boys want to see the new 007 movie so we took them there and then Alex and I did a little shopping in the Christmas Store. We were exhausted by day's end for sure.
We finally left Saturday morning and just made a bee line for home. We were home around 1pm. Alex was not feeling well and actually had a 104 temperature when we got home. She slept most of the rest of the day. The boys and I put up our 2 Christmas trees later in the day. There is one in the foyer and family room. There is now a new one in the basement too.
Sunday, Alex left for school around 1 and the boys and I struggled through getting more Christmas decorations up. NOT an easy task but we are trying very hard. Last year was very sparse and we are all working on doing better this year.

Been a busy week
Tyler is spending the weekend in Ocean City, MD at a retreat for church. He's been pretty active in church and is preparing to lead a confirmation retreat in January. It's a lot of work and he's been really involved.
Michael is at a neighbors house tonight for a birthday party. I walked him over and and on the way over he said "I bet you like it when Ty and I are both gone, you get some peace and quiet." Not really, in fact as I explained to him, I hate it when no ones home. It's the worst thing that happens to me. I deal with it, but still stinks. I work from home all day alone and that is no problem. That's what I do. Being alone in the evenings or weekends is NOT what I do and that's what I need to work on.
The picture you see is a picture that was taken of Chrissy and I in August 1984 right after I met her. She's had this picture on her desk since then. It's been in the living room and I just wet and got a new mat and frame for it. It's funny what time will do to you!
Next week is Thanksgiving. Another holiday that we are all trying to cope with. Each of the kids came to me and asked if we could go back to deep creek lake again. So I made a reservation and we'll be heading out next Wed through Saturday. Hopefully, it will help us to move ahead.

Neuro Update
He performed a nerve test today. Interesting little test. Wasn't painful but a little uncomfortable for a couple of the tests. Basically they move a bunch or electrodes around and check your muscles and nerves to see if they carry the electrical current they way they are supposed to. Sort of like putting your tongue on a 9-volt battery! The nerve test didn't show anything abnormal.
The last time I was there I was taking antibiotics for a bad sinus infection and they were not working. I went back to the primary Dr. and they gave me a much stronger regiment. That seems to have helped some as my sinuses are clearing up. About 75% better than before. Along with that the headaches have dropped considerably in severity.
So the diagnosis..... Sinus problems caused pressure on the head and spine. Since I have Occipital Neuralgia it was aggravated by the pressure and caused the nerve to react hence causing headaches. This in turn made my entire left side of my body unresponsive. 3 weeks ago the Dr. did a test where I put my arms out and he pushed down on them one at a time. My right arm was able to hold him off completely. My left could barely offer any resistance. Weird. This time my left and right were pretty close.
He did say to keep an eye on things but that hopefully it should continue getting better. Also, he said that I did not have to have the nerve block unless I wanted to. I opted not to have a needle shoved into my neck at this time.
I'm feeling better, but not the greatest. Life is much better than 3 weeks ago. Thanks to everyone for keeping an eye on me!
Now back to business!

Say goodbye to Ramsey...
We got Ramsey at the pound about 5 years ago. I remember it because I was in California on travel and Chris and the kids called me from the pound. The people there would not let them take him home unless I gave the okay. Alex named him after Patrick Ramsey of the Washington Redskins at that time.
He was a pretty good cat and got along very well with the dog. The last year he has been by my side at night sleeping in Chris's spot trying to keep me warm. We will all miss him very much as he has been a part of our family for 5 years.

Tyler caught a keeper!
CLICK HERE TO HEAR WHAT TY HAS TO SAY!Tyler went fishing at the Linganore dam today with his friend Tanner. Within 5 minutes Tyler pulled in a 14" Large Mouth Bass!!! It was pretty big I must say.
The 2 of them brought it home and then looked up on YouTube on how to clean it. Too funny. They took it in the back of the house and cleaned it and then built a fire in our fire ring and proceeded to cook it over open flame. Then they stood around and ate the whole thing!! It was a sight to see that's for sure!

More drugs!
Next, 2 weeks I go back for a Nerve test. Something they shoot electricity through a nerve and see how well it travels. I also have to get a c-spine MRI. I'm going to an open MRI but I'm very claustrophobic. I freeked out at the last real MRI I had 2 years ago and even was uneasy about the open one I had. Maybe I can get one of the boys to go with me. They'll like that.
I then went back to my primary Dr. on Friday and she prescribed Levaquin to try and knock out my sinus infection. It's worse than before. I cannot breath at all through my nose. The neurologist said that it may be causing the occipital nerve to get pinched.
So there we are. I'm sick and trying to get better. I'll keep you posted.

Alex home...
I did get a chance to meet her new coach, Erika Brown. She's pretty young and the girls seem to get along pretty well with her. I'm sure that she'll fit in pretty well.
Today I have a Dr. appointment with the neurologist. We are going to chat about what my options are to stop the headaches... Hopefully we can do away with the needle option and use that as a last resort.

Rainy Day

Saturday was an incredibly dreary day. It rained all the way until about 4pm. The boys and I were going to go and visit Alex and watch a special "pink" football game for breast cancer awareness, but the weather was just not cooperative. It's too far to go and sit in the cold and rain.
Saturday night Alex's previous coach, Kara Reber, came up to the area as she was attending a lacrosse tournament and doing some recruiting there. It was as Mount Saint Mary's which is only 25 minutes from our house. She is now the head coach at St. Mary's University in southern maryland. I had not seen her since Alex's last game last year. She's doing well and adjusting pretty well to life in Maryland.
I made dinner for Her and the boys and we actually ate in the dining room. The 1st time it has been used in over 1 year! It was really nice having a house guest for the night.

Fishing on the Bay!!!
I did NOT get sea sick. Thank goodness! I am a land lubber that is for sure.
We started the day leaving the marina with 5 of us on board. My friend Danny used his dad's boat and the 5 of us went out for a day of fishing. My friend Rich came down from Rochester, Danny, Glen, and Keith were on board with me.
We first went out and and did some bottom fishing. We caught about 40 or so small 4"-7"
Saturday, Danny and Rich surprised me and came out to my house to spend the afternoon with me. We took Michael to his lacrosse game and then came back to my house to see some football in the newly remodeled basement.

From Alex
Here are the rest of the lyrics. They pretty much wrap up how we're all feeling...I'm alone
Yeah, I don't know if I can face the night
I'm in tears and the cryin' that I do is for you
I want your love - Let's break the walls between us
Don't make it tough - I'll put away my pride
Enough's enough I've suffered and I've seen the light
CHORUS:
Baby
You're my angel
Come and save me tonight
You're my angel
Come and make it all right
Don't know what I'm gonna do
About this feeling inside
Yes it's true - Loneliness took me for a ride
Without your love - I'm nothing but a begger
Without your love - a dog without a bone
What can I do I'm sleeping in this bed alone
CHORUS
Come and save me tonight
You're the reason I live
You're the reason I die
You're the reason I give
When I break down and cry
Don't need no reason why
Baby, Baby
CHORUS
You're my angel
Come and save me tonight
you're my angel
Come and take me allright
Come and save me tonight, Come and save me tonight, Come and save me tonight,
Come and save me tonight, Come and save me tonight
And the original music video to go with it!!!

No School
Ty went to a friends to skateboard the rest of the day and I went to get Michael around 5. We then went to the grocery store for some necessities.
Have had a headache for 2 weeks straight now, so I'm calling the Dr. tomorrow to go in and see what we can find.

Today was our anniversary.
The boys and I went to church this morning and then went out to breakfast at Beans and Bagels. After that we came home and just vegged out some. I fell asleep on the couch while watching the football game.
Tyler had youth ministry tonight and he rode his bike there so I went to pick him up. Before getting there I went by the cemetery to spend some time on my anniversary with Chris. I was there arouns 7pm right when the sun was setting over the mountains. It was a beautiful evening and I just sat on her gravesite right in front of her headstone. It was nice. I felt close to her. The flowers that you see are from my friends Sam and Jenny. They came to my house on Friday morning and were a huge pick-me-up! Their anniversary was on 10/4 so we never forget. Sam introduced Chris and I many years ago and I am eternally grateful to him for that.

Clothes, clothes, clothes...
Well mulling it around for quite awhile I decided that this would be a good opportunity to donate some of Chris's clothes to a good cause. She had a LOT of clothes and all of them were still in the closet and in her dresser.
It was very hard going through and seeing all of the things that she used to where. With each piece I could vividly remember how she looked when she wore it. Putting them in bags to take away was another step in the process that we are all going through. There are still a lot of dress/work clothes left and I'll be looking for a place for that as well.
